Upon Whittaker's final appearance as the character, she instead regenerated into a form seemingly similar to the Tenth Doctor. Gatwa had previously been announced as Jodie Whittaker's successor as the programme's lead, and many reports stated he would play the Fourteenth Doctor and that Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor would regenerate into an incarnation portrayed by Gatwa. At the end of life, the Doctor regenerates as a result, the physical appearance and personality of the Doctor changes. Within the series' narrative, the Doctor is a millennia-old, alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, with somewhat unknown origins, who travels in time and space in their TARDIS, frequently with companions. Gatwa is the first black actor and the fourth Scottish actor to lead the series. He will be portrayed by Rwandan-Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa.

The only noticeable difference is that his motor doesn’t make quite as much noise when he moves. Having left the original K-9 on Gallifrey at the close of the previous adventure, The Invasion of Time, the Doctor is now accompanied by K-9 Mk II who looks and talks exactly like the old model. When in the vicinity of the segment, the tracer is able to track it down and can convert the disguised segment back into its true form. When plugged into the TARDIS console, the tracer reveals the coordinates of each segment. To enable the Doctor to locate the segments of the Key to Time, Romana has brought with her a wand-like device called a tracer. The Doctor decides to call his ‘assistant’ Romana for short and she initially believes the Time Lords’ president appointed her to help with the quest. To assist him in his search for the Key to Time, the Doctor is given a new companion: the sophisticated but inexperienced Romanadvoratrelundar from Gallifrey. With the Doctor and Romana hunting for a different segment in six consecutive stories, this was the first time that Doctor Who had attempted a ‘quest’ story arc for an entire season. The Doctor is given the task of locating the segments but is warned that the agents of the Black Guardian will also be searching for them. The Key is so powerful that to prevent it falling in to the wrong hands, it has been split into six segments which have been disguised and scattered throughout space and time. In the opening scenes of the story, the Doctor meets the White Guardian who tells him that to restore the balance of the universe, he needs to use the Key to Time.
